The first Monday in May has arrived, which signals the arrival of the annual fashion extravaganza known as the Met Gala — formally called the Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s Costume Institute gala — which raises money and celebrates the opening of a new fashion show at the museum. Titled Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, this year’s exhibition is amongst the Costume Institute’s largest shows in size, featuring 40 Vatican vestments — including Pope Benedict XV’s silk cape and the bishop’s hat of Pope Leo XIII — displayed alongside pieces by Chanel, John Galliano, Balenciaga, and Versace.

Unlike previous years, we’re excited to see the majority of guests — Rihanna, Solange Knowles, Lana del Rey and many others — have all made special efforts to dress according to the theme. Many of the celebs turned up in breathtaking gowns and standout tuxes heavily adorned with religious references including embellished gilding, crosses, halo headpieces and more.

Rihanna once again stole the spotlight (no surprise there), channeling the Pope in a jewel-encrusted look by Maison Margiela, while Cardi B showed off her baby bump in a white pearl-encrusted ensemble by Moschino, completed with matching bejeweled gloves, choker, and headpiece. Katy Perry, meanwhile, wowed everyone by accessorizing her golden Versace attire with an enormous pair of angelic wings, and Ariana Grande stepped out in a custom princess-like Vera Wang gown imprinted with images of the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling.

Our favorite look of the night, however, was Blake Lively‘s sultry custom Versace gown. We simply couldn’t take our eyes off her as she made her stunning entrance accompanied by shoe designer Christian Louboutin. The grand, crimson-colored gown, with intricate embroidery that took over 600 hours to create, features a gilded bodice, sheer panels, and long train. Lively brilliantly accessorized it with a custom-made halo and jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz, all worth a total of US$2 million. Click ahead to see all the looks we loved at this year’s Met Gala 2018.
